Well I'm a reformed chocoholic. I remember when anybody would ask me what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas, and I'd reply "CHOCOLATE!"
The funny thing was I was telling the truth. That's all I wanted, and the strange thing was, maybe it was just a magnesium deficiency.
Chocolate is a very high source of magnesium, in fact it may be the best source.
However, it is a double edged sword.
The chocolate you crave may be satisfying your need for magnesium but at the same time creating a magnesium deficiency.
How is this so?
Although chocolate is high in magnesium, the sugar added to it depletes you. Every molecule of sugar can deplete you 56 molecule's of magnesium. This is great marketing because it creates a perpetual need for you to eat chocolate that forces you to want more.
Well, What is the solution.
Eat dark chocolate that has less sugar or better still, try to find a chocolate that is at least 70% dark with no sugar added.
I started putting raw cacao powder into my daily morning smoothies, this was a great way to avoid the sugar component. After a year of this I decided to get a hair mineral test.
To my surprise it came back with a massive warning, my magnesium levels had soared to 376% above normal, Stop taking your magnesium supplement immediately.
I was adding a few heaped tablespoons to my blue berry smoothie but I wasn't taking any supplements.
At this stage I had lost my taste for chocolate, my magnesium deficiency was fixed.
My body responded by reducing my cravings. In fact I never felt like it at all.
I have noticed this in practice, by changing clients diets to include the "good stuff"
That their cravings reduced, magnesium levels rose and the added benefit, weight loss!
Choose wisely!
